Professor Duncan Maclennan – Renewing our old housing estates: will it work and how?

The renewal of ageing housing estates is a major challenge for many cities as the maintenance and social costs associated with these estates rise, along with demand for new development sites.

How can this renewal be financed and how can we ensure affordable housing is included? We will debate this with our international guest, two respondents and our audience.

Professor Duncan Maclennan, an international expert on the renewal of neighbourhoods and the economics of housing, will be discussing these challenges drawing from his experience advising governments in the UK and globally.

Two local stakeholders will respond with their perspectives: Wendy Hayhurst, CEO of NSW Federation of Housing Associations and Richard McLachlan, Development Director at Frasers Property Australia.

Maclennan is currently the Professor of Strategic Urban Management and Finance at the University of St Andrews in the UK. He has directed several urban research institutions in the UK and has advised governments on housing policy in the UK, Poland, France, Sweden, Ireland, New Zealand, Canada and Australia. He is the author of over one hundred academic articles and written/edited fourteen housing related books.

Guest speakers include:

• Professor Duncan Maclennan: University of St Andrews, UK
• Wendy Hayhurst: CEO of NSW Federation of Housing Associations
• Richard McLachlan: Development Director of Frasers Property Australia
