In Sydney, designer Sam Eggleton, founder of Convict Interiors, has transformed his 59sqm/635sqft cottage into a stylish home and workspace. Built in 1849 to house the wardens of Darlinghurst Jail, the cottage blends historic charm with contemporary design. With heritage restrictions limiting structural changes, Sam focused on clever layout adjustments to maximise space. Including a reimagined kitchen built into the shape of the home, and featuring a custom island and bifold doors that seamlessly open to the cosy courtyard. The discovery of untapped attic space also allowed for a vaulted cathedral ceiling in the king-size loft bedroom, flooding the area with natural light. Custom storage, restored fireplaces, and thoughtful design details—such as chevron oak flooring and Moroccan ceramics—make his home perfect for relaxed living and entertaining.
