Mona Hatoum – Recent Work

Lecture date: 1999-03-05

Mona Hatoum was born in Lebanon and exiled to London in 1975 by the outbreak of war. As one of the foremost contemporary international artists her work has been widely exhibited. She first rose to prominence with a series of performances and video works that focused with great intensity on the body as a metaphor for a bound system. She has since moved towards sculptural works and large installations that implicate the viewer in a complex of conflicting emotions – desire and revulsion, fear and fascination. In 1995 she was nominated for the Turner Prize.
