Urban design begins with a place and ends with architecture. In between, the chosen values define the future identity of a place. The urban plan for Sluisbuurt, one of the significant new developments emerging in the current growth of Amsterdam, is situated in a crucial site on the eastern end of the waterfront The question of identity of this area became a lens through which the relation between the past and the future of the waterfront and the city as a whole were re-examined.
