In his research report Housing and Construction: A Troubled Relationship, Professor Michael Ball concludes that housing market structures and volatility, together with the internal workings of the industry, lead to low investment, low productivity and high costs for housing. He is interested in the possibility that better design is a key element in improving housing, after a long period of neglect by architects and other design professions. In the first third of this lecture Professor Ball introduces the main arguments of his research.
The remainder of the lecture takes the form of a debate with three invited respondents: Bernard Hunt, chair of the RIBA Housing Group; Sunand Prasad of Penoyre and Prasad, a practice with long experience in innovative housing and Cedric Price.
