Longhouse Dogtrot Design

The Swedes first brought the tradition of building log cabins to the United States and one popular way of adding space to early log cabins was to build a separate log cabin next to the original cabin with gables aligned some set distance away. The intervening space between the cabins was then roofed over and made a covered porch space.

With a simple gesture the introduction of the dogtrot breezeway creates a multi-functional space while also creating separate living quarters (writer’s studio, guest room, office). The dogtrot functions as an indoor/outdoor mudroom, a place to store kayak paddles and fishing gear, a place to socialize with its built-in benches and also serves as an ad-hoc screened porch. With the addition of a fireplace it could even be a wonderful outdoor dining room. Let us know and we can customize this to fit your individual needs.
