Kai-Uwe Bergmann situates Bjarke Ingels Group’s work exactly at the mid-point between modernism and vernacular, formalism and responsiveness to site condition, which BIG terms, “Engineering without engines.” He discusses several recent and in-construction BIG projects, presenting them in order of their climates, from hot to cold, including the Grove at Grand Bay, the Big U flood barrier system for Manhattan, the Via 57 West/Courtscraper, Vancouver House, and the Amager Resource Center.
