What does it mean to be an architect in this day and age? While the developer is becoming a driving force on the manifestation of buildings, quantifying space has become a priority. As a result the architect and the skills needed to create spaces of quality, are cast aside. The architect’s ability to deal with the intangible and the unquantifiable is unappreciated.
As architects, we must revisit our lineage in the discourse of architecture to develop a new, contemporary language that allows us to re-establish ourselves as relevant today. As a case study, the talk will investigate the different forces that helped Inigo Jones to develop his own language by re-appropriating the classical language in England. Additionally, through the work of the speaker, the talk will show the benefits of breaking down architecture into facets and investigating them in their own right, with the ultimate aim to develop a unique architectural language.
Antonis Papamichael is an illustrator and an AA graduate. He is a cofounder of Studio Abroad Ltd, and the ‘creative guru’ of beta boulders. In his free time he manages his own website www.perpetualoutput.com where he investigates the relevance of the different facets of architecture as disciplines in their own right, leading to essays, comic books, casts and video games.
