Hutong Community Renewal (China) | UIA 2030 Award Winner



Live from the 2026 Edition of the UIA 2030 Award, ArchDaily sits down with Haiyang Huang, architect at the Architectural Design and Research Institute of Tsinghua University, to discuss the studio’s exemplary project: Hutong Community Renewal in Beijing, China.

As the winner of Category 4 (Participatory, Land-use-efficient and Inclusive Planning / SDG 11.3), this project demonstrates a highly sensitive, community-led approach to renewing Beijing’s historic hutong fabric. Haiyang Huang explains how small-scale, incremental interventions can ripple outward to generate profound and lasting urban transformations without wiping away historical identity.
