Nowness Asia invited the Beijing-based photographer Huang Jiaqi to create a special film performance for us as part of his ‘Self Portrait’ series, in which he explores the various stages of control, letting go and exploring the boundaries we build around ourselves.
In this brief yet bold self-portrait, he is seen smearing himself with lipstick until his entire face and torso are covered in deep red. Jiaqi first appeared in the photographs of his former partner, the late photographer Ren Hang, and has since grown into his own voice — one that is reserved, passionate and radically tender, all at once. His rare gift for combining style with sensitivity deftly uncovers the raw disposition of the people in his photographs, revealing both their strengths and their vulnerabilities, acting almost like a mirror to his own being.
