How to Make an Illustrated Photograph in Adobe Fresco | Adobe Creative Cloud

Add expression to photos by layering them with colorful illustrations.

Start from scratch, or download practice files [https://adobe.ly/2LsBENq] for a head start. Steps below.

Prep your files:

1. Save the PSD to Creative Cloud Files or your preferred cloud service.
2. Open the Adobe Fresco app on your tablet.
3. Choose Import and Open, Photoshop file, then select the practice file.
4. Use the reference photo in the PSD, or import your own.

Draw the sketch:

1. Tap the + icon to create a new layer.
2. Tap the ruler in the lower right. Use two fingers to rotate it and one finger to move it into position.
3. Choose the Conte Crayon brush from the Dry Media category.
4. Draw from the photo to the canvas along the ruler’s edge to create guides from the photo to the blank canvas.
5. The brush snaps to the ruler to create straight lines.
6. Add a new layer for the sketch.

Tip: We used the same Conte Crayon brush to draw the sketch. The sketch is provided as a hidden layer in the PSD. If you’d like to use it, tap the sketch layer then tap the eye icon to show it.

Change proportions:

1. Choose the Lasso tool.
2. Draw a selection around the foot, tap Transform from the bottom menu, then use the corner handles to resize the selection.
3. Tap Done and Deselect when finished.
4. Repeat this process to make the other leg larger and the head smaller.

Brush and blend:

1. Add a new layer.
2. Use the Eyedropper to select colors from the photo and draw with the Conte Crayon brush to add color to the sketch.
3. When you finish the illustration, select the Transform tool and drag the illustration over the original photo.
4. Choose Create empty mask from the layer options.
5. Paint with a black brush on the mask to hide portions of the illustration and reveal the photo below.

That’s it! Post your own creations and explore the great work others have submitted to social media using the #toonme and #adobedrawing hashtags.
