In advance of his Fall 2020 lecture in the Historic Preservation Program, Program Director Jorge Otero-Pailos interviews Richard Southwick FAIA, partner and the Director of Historic Preservation at the New York-based architectural firm of Beyer Blinder Belle.
They begin by exploring Southwick’s most recent project, the TWA Flight Center, designed by Eero Saarinen for Trans World Airlines at JFK International Airport. They discuss both the restoration of the terminal and also the importance in the evolution of its design. Southwick describes the spaces where he had the most interesting dialogue with Saarinen throughout the completion of this project. The conversation concludes with an explanation of how the TWA Flight Center’s new design facilitates time travel from 1962 to 2022.
