Historic Preservation Podcast #27: Katie McLaughlin Friddle on Oklahoma City’s Preservation Plan




Jorge Otero-Pailos, Program Director in GSAPP’s Historic Preservation Program, speaks with Katie McLaughlin Friddle, the Principal Planner for Current Planning and Urban Design for the City of Oklahoma City Planning Department, in advance of her Fall 2020 lecture at the school.

The conversation begins with an overview of the preservation plan for Oklahoma City, known as “preserveokc”. McLaughlin Friddle goes on to explain the challenges in implementing the preservation plan, specifically as they relate to the community’s definition of development. The also discuss how engagement in the community helped to inform Oklahoma City’s comprehensive plan, including the “Community Appearance Survey”. The discussion concludes with a conversation about the professional skills and qualities that make a strong preservation planner.
