Gary Shteyngart Meets DBC Pierre

“Writing sucks. The worst. Like masturbation with paper cuts.” Enjoy writers DBC Pierre and Gary Shteyngart in this extremely funny conversation from Louisiana Literature 2011.

“Independently, and without having met before yesterday, we may have written different halves of the same book, and answered the whole reason why we live and write. Another book may never have to be written again.” In this conversation between Gary Shteyngart and DBC Pierre the two writers talk about the difficulty of writing, the financial crisis, being paid in cheese, the popularity of television shows (they have a pitch of their own as well) and the lack of readers in America today.

Australian writer DBC Pierre was born Peter Finlay in 1961, but nick named “Dirty Pierre” by his childhood friends. DBC stands for “Dirty But Clean”. DBC Pierre was the first writer ever to receive both a Booker and a Whitbread award for the same book, Vernon God Little, in 2003.

Russian-American writer Gary Shteyngart was born Igor Shteyngart in 1972 in Leningrad and moved to America in 1979. He published his first novel in 2002 called ’The Russian Debutante’s Handbook’ has won numerous awards and was chosen by the New Yorker magazine as one of the 20 most interesting American writers under 40.
