From Splines to Lines: Philosophy’s Line – Part 2

Lecture date: 2005-01-25

Philosophys Line – the second in an eight-part lecture series which investigates how the line is understood in order to rethink its history. Philosophy, especially in the 17th and 18th Centuries, was concerned with the relationship between lines and machines. The machine plays a fundamental role in the development of a materialist account of the line. In this lecture Andrew Benjamin concentrates on the line in relation to the thought of Descartes, Fontanelle, Hegel, and Leibniz. Benjamin is currently Professor of Critical Theory in Design and Architecture at the University of Sydney.
