Frei Otto – Cities, Centres, New Forms for Living

Lecture date: 1976-01-01

In a talk given in 1976, the architect and engineer Frei Otto discusses the structures and processes that have influenced his approach to form-finding. Otto illustrates his discussion both with examples of his work and with numerous images of spider-webs, shells, and other natural structures. Since the 1950s, he has been an outstanding innovator in the field of lightweight tensile and membrane structures, pioneering many advances in structural mathematics and civil engineering. His best-known works are the German Pavilion for the 1967 Expo in Montreal, designed with Rolf Gutbrod, and the roof structure of the Olympic Sport Stadium in Munich, Germany, with Behnisch and Leonhardt (1972). He has won numerous architectural awards and honours.
