Annual Lecture Series
21 September 2017
In this lecture, Charles Holland will use the origin and foundation myths of architecture as a frame to discuss a number of recent projects. The term foundation myths refers both to the personal stories we tell ourselves when we design as well as wider narratives about the origins of architecture and the role of historical sources and precedent. Charles’ recent projects employ explicit historical references as a method of developing contemporary architectural form. Through this exploration the lecture will reflect on the disciplinary and personal justifications underlying the production of architecture.
Charles Holland is an Architect, teacher and writer. He is the principal of Charles Holland Architects, an architecture and research practice based in the UK. He is also a Professor of Architecture at the University of Brighton where his research focuses on the relationship of academia to practice. Charles writes regularly about architecture and design and contributes a monthly column for the RIBA Journal on the subject of utopias.
