F. Sheffield Hale on Community-Led Research

Anna Gasha and Shuyi Yin, Ph.D. students in GSAPPā€™s Historic Preservation Program, speak with F. Sheffield Hale. Hale is the current President and CEO of the Atlanta History Center. Hale also serves as a trustee emeritus of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Fox Theatre, Inc., Buckhead Coalition, Midtown Alliance, and Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau. He is a past Chair of the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation, the Atlanta History Center, St. Judeā€™s Recovery Center, Inc., and the State of Georgiaā€™s Judicial Nominating Commission.

This episode focuses on a project that the Atlanta History Center started in 2016, the Confederate Monument Interpretation Guide, in order to explore one of the commonly suggested solutions to contested monuments: recontextualization with further historical research. The interview covers the need for community engagement and the legal aspects pertinent in the process of dealing with controversial Confederate monuments.
