Esther Shalev-Gerz – The Perpetual Movement of Memory

Lecture date: 1999-01-29

Esther Shalev-Gerz discusses the movement between participation and understanding when dealing with work in public space – work realised through different media such as installations, photography and projection. For her, in projects such as the ‘Monument Against Fascism or Reasons for Smiles’ audience participation leads to the creation of memory/experience.

Based in Paris, Shalev-Gerz is internationally recognised for her seminal contributions to the field of art in the public realm and her ongoing inquiry into the nature of democracy, cultural memory and the politics of public space.
