Last week we talked a bit about using section cuts to create animations. This week, we’re going to apply that to creating construction animations in SketchUp.
So if you’ll remember, last week we talked about the way SketchUp animations the transition between active section cuts.
For example, I’m going to add a section cut to my model here, and we’re going to create 2 scenes where the cut is active, and a scene where the cut isn’t active. One note, because I didn’t mention this last week – you can create section cuts inside groups and components so you only cut through objects in those groups.
So let’s start by hiding everything except our site. I recommend setting your model up in the outliner so each one of your moving pieces is in its own group. This will make your life WAY easier moving forward.
Once I’ve hidden everything in my side, I’m going to create a section plane inside my site group. Once I’ve done that, I’m going to make the cut through the site active plane by right clicking and selecting make active. Turn visible section planes off. Once you’ve done this, add a scene. Then, go in and turn the section cut back off.
Now, if you click back and forth between the scenes, you can see that it will animate the transition between the scenes. Now that we’ve done this, we’re going to unhide our first piece that we want to animate.
Do the same thing – add a section plane inside this group. Make sure the one that hides your geometry is active, and add a new scene. Then turn it off and add a new scene.
This is basically what you’re going to do for your whole animation. The trick is to just make sure you’re consistent with the way that you do this. The outliner will be a huge help for you.
Also, double check as you go to make sure that your animation is doing what you want.
Finally, you can adjust the speed of the transitions and the pauses between transitions in the animation settings. You can speed up or slow down the delay between scenes by changing the transition times.
