“You’ve got to read if you want to write.” British writer Bernardine Evaristo shares her advice on how to keep up your stamina as an aspiring writer.
To Bernardine Evaristo, reading is vital to being able to write. She teaches creative writing and is surprised by some of her students’ approach to reading: “Often, they don’t think there’s a relationship between reading and writing.” Evaristo also points out the importance of practising and searching for new knowledge: “Get the help that you need from workshops or courses so you can develop your skills,” she says and continues: “If you really want to be a writer, it’s a life-long career.”
Bernardine Evaristo (b. 1963) is a British writer, critic, poet, and playwriter. She has written ten books and numerous texts that span many genres. Her writing and projects are based on her interest in the African diaspora. Her novel ‘Girl, Woman, Other’ won the Booker Prize in 2019. She was the first Black woman and Black British person to win it in its fifty-year history. Evaristo has won other prizes, including the British Book Award’s Fiction Book of the Year & Author of the Year and the Indie Book Award for Fiction. Her books have been translated into more than 40 languages.
