Architecture, My Life, My Stories: Helder Pereira at TEDxLuanda 2013

Architect, passionate about design, sustainability and contemporary human environments Helder is passionate about design interventions and collaborations that transcend traditional disclipines or economic models — he sees the creativity and flexibility inherent in “Angolanidade” as an opportunity to (re)create design practices and creative industries that are generated out of a unique non-western context, yet have a global vision.

Born in Luanda, Helder dabbled in photography, dreamt of being an architect, and after many and varied multi-disclipinary collaborations, travels and encounters, ended up calling himself a designer. He studied architecture in Portugal and Austrália, and after working in architectural practice in the land of kangaroos he embarked on the “Masters of Design Futures” program, which examined design philosophy, ethics and sustainability in relation to the unfolding problems of unsustainability in contemporary human environments.

Dreaming with eyes open was always one of his favourite hobbies.

Helder returned to live in Luanda in 2012 and is a director of Atelier Mulemba, an architectural design, research and construction company that responds to the Angolan context, Integrating and bridging the commercial realities/requirements with the practical and theoretical possibilities to create a new model of design practice that produces innovative and contextually relevant design solutions.

Helder is 34 years old and believes that it’s not the world that needs to change, it’s us!
