In her lecture for the AA’s Performance, Protest & Politics series, writer and producer Portia Kamons considers a series of creative acts of protest that confront urgent issues of their time. From the public expressions of rage and fear that characterised ActUP protests at the start of the AIDS epidemic, to the student-led March for Our Lives, examples from documentary film, theatre, photography and interactive media illustrate how demands for change have been expressed through forceful, collaborative, creative acts. In this baffling time when our fundamental institutions and beliefs are being challenged, could relentless creativity and collective experience be the antidote to apathy and fake news?
Portia Kamons is a producer, consultant and writer with experience in theatre, live events, music and feature film.
