A Dreamy Apartment That Redefines Quiet Luxury (House Tour)

Located on the foreshore of Sydney Harbour, Lavender Bay Home is the dreamy apartment of a local family. Crafting its own take on ‘quiet luxury,’ Alexandra Kidd Interior Design (AKID) highlights custom details and select materials in an apartment fit for entertaining.

Lavender Bay Home is set within a tightly held apartment block, a compact structure from the early 1990s that sits close to the city. Despite its nearness to the urban environment, the building is immersed in the calm ambience of the harbour, making it the ideal place to create a dreamy apartment. “Our client for this project is a long-standing client,” says Alexandra Kidd, principal at AKID. “It was a really lovely opportunity to work again with this family and to create a completely different space.” Emphasising high-quality materials, Lavender Bay Home embodies a fresh response to a simple brief: to deliver a quietly luxurious, robust space to live and entertain for years to come. While in some areas the dreamy apartment embraces natural light, it also offers spaces that counter the brightness of the outdoors to foster a sense of intimacy and reflection. This is achieved through a combination of task, architectural and ambient lighting, controlled by a master control system.

Upon entering the dreamy apartment, the first impression is one of open space; the apartment foyer, similar to a gallery, echoes the grand scale of entry spaces found in detached houses. To the immediate left of the foyer is the children’s room, “created for the ultimate family sleepover,” says Kidd. With bunk beds, a day bed, handmade light fixtures and colourful wallpaper, the playful space flows to the adjacent children’s bathroom, which features a green freestanding glass tub. To the right of the hallway is an elegant guest bedroom and, further down, a lounge room offers a quiet space that, like the master suite, is defined by a gentle, cocooning quality. The living-kitchen-dining area unfolds at the end of the hallway and, as natural light enters the space from different windows, a sweeping view of Sydney Harbour is presented.

“The material palette chosen for the home was really meant to be an extension of all the natural colours and textures beyond the apartment,” says Morgan Reed, the lead interior designer for the dreamy apartment. “We selected Elton Group’s Milkwood as the main timber veneer throughout the home due to its very consistent character and its beautiful softness.” Eveneer Ristretto, also from Elton Group, is used to add visual richness while enhancing the character of the light-neutral Milkwood. “It was the special finish used inside a lot of the joinery, as you had this beautiful unwrapping element as you open all the cupboards,” says Kidd. “It was also used and extended into a lot of the custom-made furniture pieces.”

Showcasing a balance of open and private spaces, Lavender Bay Home allows a family to live effortlessly on Sydney Harbour. AKID’s interpretation of quiet luxury is compelling, enabling forms and materials to create a nuanced, elevated experience of place.
