Throughout its long history as a French colonial city, Algiers was the site of recurrent conflicts between the colonisers and the colonised. Zeynip Celik argues that these social, political and cultural battles were crystallized in architectural and urban forms which were subsequently used to define cultural identities. She also investigates how Algiers was used as a testing ground for Beaux Arts and modernist masterplans, leading to the eventual fragmentation of the casbah and a dramatic housing shortage.
Zeynep Celik is Professor of Architecture at the New Jersey Institute of Technology and is the author of many publications including Urban Forms and Colonial Confrontations: Algiers Under French Rule and The Remaking of Istanbul: Portrait of an Ottoman City in the Nineteenth Century.
