Matt Olson (February 1, 2017)

Matt Olson begins a discussion of the background of his projects related to contemporary art and design with a clarification of terminology. He prefers “practice” (especially “daily practice”) to “work”, and values translation, in-betweenness, and the sense that “everything matters.” Olson discusses several of his projects, from early landscape designs and plywood furniture through projects for the Walker Art Center, Frieze magazine, Art Basel Miami, and the Aspen Art Museum. Olson concludes with a mediation on his idea of an open practice, stressing an approach that is less “anti” than “counter,” as “an attempt at integrity.”
