In this tutorial, you will learn how to create vector field-driven tile patterns on a freeform roof polysurface using the Nautilus plugin for Grasshopper.
We start by generating a roof from any floor plan curves, then define custom tile geometry, and control their orientation through a vector field influenced by the roof topology using Inverse Distance Weighting Field. Finally, we map the flat pattern onto the 3D surface using source and target planes.
In the extended version of this tutorial, we are going to continue building up our project and we will add walls, extrude mesh tiles using only Grasshopper native components, and the best will be learning how to create ridge roof geometry using a cool trick to offset curves without braking the geometry.
