10 Artists on Abstract Art

”It challenges you to understand something that is different.” Meet ten of the world’s most inspiring abstract artists.

“The process starts abstract,” says Ali Banisadr, “and then I start to see within it many, many infinite possibilities of what it could become. For Ida Ekblad, the world itself shapes her art: “The negative spaces between branches and leaves become a stroke. It’s almost like I’m finding my own paintings out in the world.”

British painter Ian McKeever has little interest in figuration: “I think there are enough tables and chairs and people in the world already,” he says. “You’re making something very specific to painting that none of the other media can do. That’s authentic to painting and purely to painting.” Julie Mehretu reflects on the need for patience: abstract paintings, she says, must be given time to reveal themselves to the viewer.

For Megan Rooney, abstraction is all-encompassing: “There’s everything in the painting for me. There’s skin texture, there are smile lines, there’s grimaces, there’s wombs, there’s flesh.”

The video also features Barbara Kasten, Flora Yukhnovich, Amanda Ziemele, Shirazeh Houshiary, and the late Sam Gilliam. You can find the full-length interviews with all the artists on our channel.
