Artist Ai Weiwei: Reality Is a Ruin

From the Archive is a series in which we highlight some of the +1,300 artist interviews we have produced over the past 13 years while reminiscing about some of our favorite moments and meetings.

In this excerpt Ai Weiwei explains how modern society separates individuals from reality through globalization, using the market as an example: “it’s a miracle, but at the same time we’ve been cut off from the human struggle”.
Ai Weiwei (b. 1957) is a renowned Chinese artist and activist known for his outspoken criticism of the Chinese government and his advocacy for human rights. His politically charged works have been exhibited globally, including at Tate Modern, MoMA, and Berlin’s Martin-Gropius-Bau. Notable pieces include Dropping a Han Dynasty Urn (1995), Sunflower Seeds (2010), and the films Human Flow (2017) and The Rest (2019). He also co-designed the 2008 Beijing Olympic Stadium. Weiwei has received numerous honors, such as Amnesty International’s Ambassador of Conscience Award.
