Alan Stanton and Paul Williams present a selection of the work of their practice. Stanton Williams made their name in the 1980s with designs for exhibitions, temporary buildings, and a shop for Issey Miyake. These projects have lead to major commissions, including the extension to Birmingham City Museums and Art Gallery, the exhibition galleries at the Design Museum, a new wing for the twentieth-century collection of the National Portrait Gallery, an educational facility for Birkbeck in Bloomsbury, and, in rural Warwickshire, the conversion of the Robert Adam designed mansion house Compton Verney into a public art gallery. In assessing their work Rowan Moore commented that their ‘architecture is contemplative, opposed to superfluity. It relies on an implacable attentiveness, developed over years of careful work, to the careful placing of objects in space and to the properties of materials and light’.
