Distinguished Alumni Lecture *
Frederick Fisher
Principal, Frederick Fisher and Partners, Los Angeles

Frederick Fisher leads a practice focused on art, academic institutions, and residences. Fred received his Bachelor of Arts from Oberlin College in Art and Master of Architecture from UCLA. Artist collaboration is a career long commitment. Fred was awarded the Franklin D. Israel Rome Prize in 2008. Recent projects include the Annenberg Community Beach House, Princeton’s Sherrerd Hall and Caltech’s Annenberg Center for Information Science and Technology. The renovations of Princeton’s Firestone Library & A. Q. Jones’ Sunnylands are in construction. Fisher’s watercolors were exhibited at the Cella Gallery and Otis College’s Maltz Gallery presented an installation based on his Rome sketchbooks. Delight motivates Fisher’s practice. Creating a framework for art and a picturesque relationship with nature are constant themes. Explicit construction and an aesthetic of assemblage enrich the loft sensibility of flexible space and enduring minimal forms that support creative living and working environments. Architecture is a device for mending the disjunctions of contemporary life (through relationships and memory) rather than expressive them.

*The UCLA Department of Architecture and Urban Design Distinguished Alumni Lecture series features renowned graduates whose innovation and accomplishments have significantly impacted the field of architecture and or urban design.
