Talking Architecture Series #6: Mark Lee on Gund Hall

Talking Architecture is a series of live interviews hosted by the course Talking Architecture (VIS 2359), integrally produced by students with the support of Instructor Diego Grass and TA Malvin Wibowo. These events are spin-offs of GSD-sponsored public lectures held during the semester. They intend to extend the conversations between these guests and the GSD community.

In this sixth session, we talked with Mark Lee. He is Professor in Practice at GSD and the current Chair of the Department of Architecture, leaving his tenure on June 2023. He is also a principal and founding partner of the Los Angeles-based architecture firm Johnston Marklee, established in 1998. Recent projects include the Menil Drawing Institute, on the campus of the Menil Collection, scheduled to open in 2018; a renovation of the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, completed in September 2017; and the new UCLA Graduate Art Studios campus in Culver City, California. Together with partner Sharon Johnston, Mark Lee was the Artistic Director for the 2017 Chicago Architecture Biennial.

This interview was conducted on March 30, 2023, at Gund Hall. Students were in control of all aspects of the interview (q&a, staging, editing). The team included: Ethica Burt, Max Goeggel, Giu Hur, Jason Leo, Ashutosh Lohana, Layal Mehri, Karim Saleh, Ali Sherif, Andrew Suiter, and Sara-Ann Yong.
