Here’s why you should be making physical models of your architecture. Even with so many digital tools that are faster and more accurate and easier to change, I still build physical scale models of my architecture. I treat building models as a form of three-dimensional sketching. The act of making and manipulating things with your hands has been scientifically shown to produce more efficient, more creative, and more insightful solutions to problems. Physical feedback from our physical environment benefits our creative performance.
Making models allows me to:
– Step away from the distractions of an all digital environment
– Sketch in three-dimensions
– Have a tangible product to engage with and show the client
– Unearth new ideas. Deliberate vs. unexpected or unplanned design revelations provide insights I can’t find any other way
– Models are teaching tools of real-world physics
– They allow for metacognition: thinking about how you’re thinking about a problem.
At its heart, architecture is about making and I hope this inspires you to go and make (great) things!
