Why architects should copy, agonistically | Cristina Goberna & Urtzi Grau | TEDxMadrid

Cristina Goberna and Urtzi Grau use Replicas–both literal copies of existing works of architecture and responses to previous statements–to re-imagine architectural production, architectural pedagogy, the legal status of architecture and the role architects play in the city. In an agonistic presentation, they lay out the potential transformation of architecture, a field that has resisted embracing replicas, and in so doing, has hindered its potential.

Cristina Goberna is a practitioner architect, educator and critic. As a Fulbright Fellow she was awarded a MsAAD at the GSAPP of Columbia University and as a Caja Madrid Fellow, an AAR Certificate by the same school. She completed her Bachelor in Architecture at the University of Seville, and is currently a PhD candidate in the School of Architecture of Barcelona where she develops her dissertation “From Pan to Europan or the Construction of the European Union Urban Imaginary,” in 2010-2011 she was a visiting scholar at the NYU Institute of Fine Arts. She is co-founder of Fake Industries Architectural Agonism, her work has been exhibited internationally and her projects and writings have been published widely. Currently, she is faculty at GSAPP in Columbia University and at Cooper Union School of Architecture.

Urtzi Grau is an architect co-founder of Fake Industries Architectural Agonism who graduated from the School of Architecture of Barcelona in 2000, was awarded MsAAD at the GSAPP of Columbia University in 2004, and is currently completing his Ph.D. at Princeton University on the 1970’s urban renewal of Barcelona. Grau is currently the Director of the Master of Research (MoRe) in the School of Architecture at University of Technology Sydney and has previously taught studios at Cooper Union, Princeton University, Columbia University and Cornell University.
