Towards a more democratic architecture | Thorsten Deckler | TEDxSoweto

Architect Thorsten Deckler argues, with disarming charm and humour, that whilst many professionals continue to design cities with outdated mindsets, people in informal settlements are showing the way with highly responsive, organic solutions. Practising architecture today, he contends, should mean designing for the people, with the people.

Thorsten Deckler is founding partner of 26‘10 south Architects, an award winning practice based in Johannesburg. He speaks on what it means to be a socially committed architect in one of the most unequal cities in the world.

This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.

About TEDx

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)
