Mark Cousins – In the Name of the Object: The Judgement of Paris – Part 2

Lecture date: 1998-11-13

A lecture series on the relation of aesthetics to the art object – in particular to the object of architecture – which asks why it is that architectural theory has frequently been derailed from a critical position by the insistence that it responds to judgements of use and particularity. It is not that these issues are unimportant but by using them to disassociate architecture from other forms, a deformation of architectural theory occurs within the aesthetic domain. Paradoxically, this has led to a widespread call for a ‘theory of effects’ in architecture without recognising that this was the promise of Kant.

These lectures attempt to renovate the terms in which architecture conceives of itself as a realm of effects.
