In today’s SketchUp quick tip, we’re going to learn how to turn shadows on and off in SketchUp.
SketchUp has a very comprehensive shadow and shading system built in that you can use to generate accurate shadows in your model. To access this system, you’re going to use the shadows section of the tray.
If you don’t see the shadows section, go to window, tray, shadows. Also, make sure “Show tray” has been checked.
Now, let’s go ahead and turn shadows on. This is actually a little tricky.
Look in the shadows section – there’s a button to the left of the time zone section that looks like a box (but doesn’t totally look like a button ).
If you click on it, it will turn shadows on in your model.
You can then use the time and date sliders to adjust the shadows in your model.
Please note – in larger, more complex models, shadows will significantly slow down your PC, so only turn this on when you actually need it – keep it turned off the rest of the time.
There are also options for selecting if shadows will cast a shadow on the ground, or on other faces. These can help you further generate the shadows you’re developing.
