Women discuss their individual experiences within the field of architecture as well as their educational and professional backgrounds.
After a short introduction on the purpose and goal of this panel discussion, the first presentation was given by Lynn Paxton, who described her educational and professional background. She emphasized the need for professionalism and pragmatism within the practice of architecture.
Next, Claire Forest, described her educational and professional background. She showed slide images and discussed her most recent work, which was comprised of medical facility regional planning and the methods by which data was obtained in order to create plans that reflected accurately the need of medical facilities.
Margo Siegel discussed her educational and professional experience. Siegel specifically discussed the impact of being a woman within the field of architecture, based on her experiences. Due to being a woman, she was met with opposition during her academic career at Pratt, and discussed the difficulty she encountered looking for employment. She ultimately opened her own practice and then showed examples of some of her work.
Inga Rose focused on describing her attitude within the professional environment as well as discussing her background. She found that a positive attitude was essential in the work place, as well as the necessity to have pride, confidence and a strong work ethic. She stated that although women need to prove themselves within the workplace, that when respect by colleagues was achieved, that it was well deserved.
Ena Dubnoff discussed her educational and professional background. She stated that during the time of her education the world was a more peaceful place and she was idealistic in believing what she was taught, which was that good design was the most important and if done successfully it would enrich peoples’ lives. She discussed her search to find her place within the field of architecture, which ultimately led her to teach at SCI-Arc and begin the Community Design Studio which dealt with real projects and real solutions.
Siegel discussed her background and influences from her youth that motivated her to become an architect and influence her aesthetic. She discussed some of her projects.
