In the early stages of design, what do you start with? Form or Function.
Louis Sullivan said “form follows function,” but a lot of people misunderstand that quote. It doesn’t mean that form is subordinate to function. He meant that they have to go together. The function should be the driving factor in architectural design, but it always goes hand-in-hand with the form. In renovation projects, or form based codes, the form may technically come before the function, but you are designing for people and their needs, the function has to prevail.
