Groningen, a province in the northeast of the Netherlands, is experiencing earthquakes due to the extraction of gas. This phenomenon is called induced seismicity. But what is induced seismicity? And how can the risk to life safety and the consequences for the built environment be reduced? The Groningen situation is unique and for this reason, solutions for the built environment cannot simply be copied from abroad. To contribute to a basic understanding of the various topics in this field, knowledge lectures have been developed as Open Course Ware by a large number of scientists and practitioners.

This Open Course Ware is initiated by TU Delft in cooperation with Arup, TU Eindhoven and TNO. This public and private initiative combines engineering, architecture and management perspectives. The 30 video lectures provide conceptual knowledge of seismicity and basic seismic concepts. This knowledge is then related to the different structures and their behaviour under seismic loading. Finally, in the last theme more procedural knowledge will be outlined, related to the multidisciplinary challenges in Groningen.

I. Seismic Risk

This theme introduces the concept of seismic risk related to the Groningen region. You will learn how to define a seismic risk and identify the various components of the Basic Risk module.

II. Seismicity

This theme introduces the processes leading to seismicity within the Groningen gas field and outlines the key parameters of geotechnical engineering related to earthquakes.

After these lectures you will for instance be able to explain the processes leading to seismicity within the Groningen gas field and outline the key parameters of geotechnical engineering related to earthquakes. And you will be able to recognise the relevance of the shallow subsurface in Groningen related to the induced earthquakes.

III. Basic Seismic Concepts

This theme outlines the basic concepts for earthquakes analysis of structures and the associated key seismic design concepts. This theme also introduces the history and development of seismic building codes and in particular the development of the Dutch Practical Guideline, NPR 9998.

After these lectures you will for instance be able to interpret the basics for earthquake analysis of structures and the associated key seismic concepts and relate the development of seismic building codes with the necessity of new Dutch design guideline.

IV. Behaviour of Structures under Seismic Load

This theme introduces the building stock in Groningen and explains the differences in behaviour of building structures and building materials subjected to earthquakes.

After these lectures you will for instance be able to relate the building stock in Groningen to Seismic Risk, recognize the considerations of designers when designing new earthquake resistant buildings and demonstrate how building structures and materials behave differently under earthquakes.

V. Seismic Assessment and Structural Upgrading

This theme introduces the seismic assessment process and the different concepts of structural upgrading of existing masonry buildings, including identification of monumental values of historic buildings. This theme also provides an overview of the challenges in Groningen with regards to spatial planning under uncertainty, strategic collaboration in construction and an integral design approach when structurally upgrading existing buildings.

After these lectures you will for instance be able to describe the main process of assessing an existing building in a seismic area, distinguish between different methods of conventional structural upgrading for masonry buildings, recognise new technologies for structural upgrading, such as base isolation and energy dissipative systems, classify the values of monuments and historic buildings when upgrading and discuss the importance of adaptive planning under uncertainty, strategic collaboration and integral design in Groningen.
