Past as Prologue was a symposium held in November 2014 in honor of Michael Graves on the occasion of his fiftieth year in practice. Organized by The Architectural League and hosted by Parsons The New School for Design, the day brought together 14 architects, designers, educators, writers, and others to celebrate Graves’ remarkable and distinctive body of work.
Francisco Sanin traces the evolution of Graves’ career, from his 1965 Linear City proposal developed with Peter Eisenman, to his contemporary work as a “reluctant healthcare expert.” The overview contextualizes Graves’ design career within the prominent theoretical and pedagogical influences of his time as well as foregrounds the impact of his post-graduate residency at the American Academy of Rome and the prominent role that drawing and painting have had to Graves. Sanin is a professor at the Syracuse School of Architecture and the director of the Syracuse Architecture London program.
