To mark the 30th anniversary of the RIBA Stirling Prize, we’re looking back at three decades of architecture, exploring the projects, ideas and people that have shaped the built environment since the prize was first awarded in 1996.
From the world-renowned landmarks such as Norman Foster’s 30 St Mary Axe (the Gherkin) and Zaha Hadid’s MAXXI, to a social housing complex for over-65s, Liverpool’s Everyman Theatre and Hastings Pier the prize has celebrated architecture in all its forms.

From the buildings that have shaped our cities and communities, to the architects and people who use them every day, we’re exploring how the Stirling Prize has both reflected and influenced architectural history.
Discover how the Scottish Parliament came to embody the democratic ideals of a nation, at a time when architecture became increasingly tied to civic identity. Feel how Maggie’s Centre London offers solace, peace and calm for its users. And discover how Kingston University brought students and the wider community together under one roof.
As architecture continues to respond to some of the biggest challenges facing society, we ask: what makes architecture matter, and what role can it play in making the future a better place?
