Status: Techno

Andre Bato and Kristian Kirk turn on the lights in this study of how we move when we get down to techno. The film is part of their wider STATUS series, which examines the relationship between the camera and its subjects by capturing—in stark settings reminiscent of beauty advertisements—the unique ways in which we use our bodies. Speaking about the concept behind their deceptively simple project, the artist duo explain: “The films bridge distinct subcultures with refined art direction, cultivating in bold video vignettes featuring a diverse spectrum of characters. It’s ultimately about how versatile the body—and our identities are—when placed in a confined space.”

The artist’s project is to be exhibited alongside a set of wide-screen projections and ‘body sculptures,’ designed by Kirk, at GAZE in New York.
