IDS16 showcases innovation and excellence in design with awe-inspiring features, exhibits and talks 


Toronto, Canada, 2016-01-18 –

 The countdown continues to the 18th annual Interior Design Show, Canada’s largest design fair. Welcoming the greatest design talents from Canada and abroad, IDS16 promises to be nothing short of spectacular. From powerhouse speakers to inspiring installations, these sixteen elements of IDS16 are not to be missed.

1. IDS16 Opening Night Party: The Party Presented By Scavolini and The Globe And Mail:

On January 21st from 7-11:00 p.m. get ready to celebrate design with more than 5,500 industry movers and shakers, from local practitioners to international stars. Inspired by the IDS16 International Guest of Honour Tom Dixon, this year’s kick-off brings a British invasion to the show floor. Think royal blues, gold and British pop intermixed with cutting-edge design and top notch entertainment, including music from Toronto-based national DJ group BELLOSOUND. Tickets: $56 in advance and $61 at the door. 

Afterparty: The Opening Night After Party will be taking place Victor Restaurant & Bar, Hotel LeGermain from 11:00 p.m. onwards.

2. Maker:

Last year’s hit feature is back for a second year and is now doubled in size! Featuring a selection of North American designers who are manufacturing in small numbers and have limited distribution, Maker embodies the heart of artisanal design. The exhibit will feature creative works from Coolican & Company (booth 2030), fig40 (booth 2132), KROFT + CO (booth 2130), Miles & May (booth 2028), Coo Studio (booth 2127), 1925 Workbench (booth 2128) and Wood Anchor (booth 2231).

3. Woodlove:

Presented by Ontario Wood and designed by Toronto-based design collective Citizens and Collaborators, Woodlove is a curated space that helps consumers identify and purchase locally made Ontario Wood Products. Presented in a visually striking installation WOODLOVE pays homage to Canada’s proud heritage and one of its most valuable resources. Stop by and experience WOODLOVE at exhibit space 1700 for designs from notable partners including: The Timeless Materials Company, Century Wood Products Baker Brokers, South Street Boat Builders, Storyboard Furniture, Brothers Dressler, Rekindle Your Life, Jennifer Rong Designs, True North Trappings and more!

4. Excel Naturally Sweetened Lounge:

Join interior designer and lifestyle curator, Jillian Harris and Excel ® Naturally Sweetened Gum at IDS for the ultimate experience in fresh, simple style and taste. Jillian, Host of  Love it or List It (Canada) & Love It Or List It Too (USA), will also be hosting the official launch of Excel Naturally Sweetened on Friday, January 22 and Saturday, January 23 in a space that is enhanced with her signature design touch. Meet Jillian and hear about her favourite simple choices for 2016 in food, fashion and design at exhibit space 810. 

5. National Bank Design Lab:

Focused on Powering Your Idea’s visitors are welcome to enjoy an immersive design consultation experience at National Bank Design Lab where experts from the Interior Designers of Canada (IDC) will share new design trends and solutions to fit any home renovation needs. Guests are invited to interact with unique design stations and an exciting inspiration table where they can showcase their favourite 2016 design concepts for a chance to win an in-home design consultation with a member of the IDC. National Bank will also be giving away $10,000 towards one lucky IDS winner’s dream home renovation. Enter to win a dream renovation at exhibit space 1228.

6. Volvo Space:

Design house Creative Shift Studio and Volvo Cars of Canada have partnered to create an exhibit that explores the question of “What Does Design Mean To You?” This interactive space will become a meeting point where designers and the public can share their thoughts of design in Canada, Sweden and about the iconic automotive brand. Visit Volvo at exhibit space 1028.

7. Metropolitan Hardwood Floors’ Kentwood IDS Challenge:

A long-time IDS exhibitor, Metropolitan Hardwood Floors has transformed their traditional booth into the Kentwood IDS Challenge to showcase the talent and creativity of students from some of Canada’s leading design schools. Finalists from the design competition will be at IDS16 and the winners will be announced on the floor on Friday, January 22. Visit Canada’s next generation of designers at exhibit space 1510.

8. Habitat for Humanity’s Brick for Brick:

Habitat for Humanity has teamed up with Mega Bloks to launch a fundraising initiative at IDS16 in which they will build a giant lifesize home made entirely out of Mega Bloks on the show floor. Drop by the Habitat booth at IDS16 to pledge a blok to be added to the installation, which will go towards the purchase of a real brick to be used in a project helping one in five Canadian families who live in inadequate housing. 9. Caviar20: Decades of Chairs:

Celebrating all things art and chairs, Caviar20 and founder Troy Seidman will be showcasing his signature curated mix of art and design in an exhibit entitled “Decades of Chairs”.  The exhibit will feature artists such as Frank Stella, Sorel Etrog, Charles Pachter, Jenny Holzer, and Vasa Mihich as well as a selection of iconic chairs from the 20th century. Visit Decades of Chairs at exhibit space 600 to see some of the most impressive and sculptured chairs of the last century.

10. Designboom mart:

Shop eclectic finds from emerging and established designers from around the globe as designboom mart returns to IDS. Set up as a design bazaar with items available for purchase on-site, visitors will meet and interact with the designers themselves at designboom mart’s only Canadian location. designboom mart is curated by designboom Magazine, the world’s first design and architecture online magazine, voted by TIME Magazine as one of the top 100 design influencers in the world. designboom Mart will feature 21 sellers including Lani Adeoye, Tat Chao, Contour & Co and Akiko Kato. 11. Studio North and Prototype:

Visit Studio North and Prototype to meet Canada’s next great talents. Studio North features a curated mix of Canadian independent designers who will have the unique opportunity to have their work reviewed by a panel of international industry leaders and design experts. Prototype highlights a product not currently in production that address the theme of innovative consumer products intended for mass production. Known as a show highlight, expect to see designs including the Anaglyph Mirror by Jordan Söderberg Mills using technology from NASA, and the A1 Desk Lamp featuring Organic LED lighting technology by aerelight which recently won a $50,000 grant from Shell Canada, Canadian Geographic and MaRS Discovery District for its commitment to protecting the environment. 

12. Must-See Seminars:

IDS16 will be offering seminars that are not to be missed. Attendees will have access to seminars by Ransom Ratcliff, Andrew Pike, Sharon Grech, Laura Stein, Dvira Ovadia, Samantha Sannella and more. Seminars will touch on a wide range of topics including Renovation Budgets Made Easy, Adding Value to Your Real Estate, 2016 Design Trends and more.  For a complete list of seminars click here. Friday’s Trade Day seminars are presented by Graphisoft and Saturday’s consumer seminars are presented by Benjamin Moore.

13. House & Home Sunday:

House & Home Sunday gives consumers a chance to see Canadian design personalities up close and personal. At 12:00 p.m. House & Home Publisher Lynda Reeves and Editor-in-Chief Suzanne Dimma share their thoughts on 2016 trends and how to incorporate them into the home. Editors Joel Bray and Jennifer Koper offer tips to think like a stylist at 1:30 p.m. Taking the stage at 3:00 p.m., House & Home’s Hot List brings together three Canadian designers who should be on your design radar. Catch all three captivating talks on the Caesarstone Stage on Sunday, January 24.

14. Off the Wall/Off the Loom:

Off the Loom/Off the Wall is a tactile exhibit that showcases what’s next in textiles and wallcoverings, with a focus on craftsmanship and design. Joining Off the Wall/Off the Loom this year is Digital Print Specialties, Hugo Diego, and ROLLOUT.

15. Central Lounge Café:

Toronto architecture and design firm Denegri Bessai Studio have designed the Central Lounge Café where IDS visitors can take a break and grab a bite to eat. Denegri Bessai Studio strives to push the limit of experimental architecture in Canada, to bring highly innovative research and development extant in academia into the marketplace and to produce a refined architecture of quality for clients and users. Denegri Bessai Studio recently created Panamaze, a temporary installation for the International Plaza of the Athletes Village at the Toronto PanAm Games, and have been tasked with creating Toronto’s Mirvish Village.

16. BLANCO:

The world’s leading manufacturer and designer of premium kitchen sinks, faucets and accessories, BLANCO’s booth at IDS16 will feature a collaboration with Ryerson School of Interior Design that will see the winning design project displayed as the result of a kitchen design competition. BLANCO has also chosen IDS16 as the venue for their biggest launch in Canadian history. See BLANCO at exhibit space 710.
