Sheffield Society of Architects – Sheffield Steel Pandas

The Sheffield Society of Architects are very pleased that David Wei of Hatch Architects, designers of the steel pandas, has agreed to tell us their story. As part of wider art installations at Sheffield’s New Era Development, three steel panda sculptures have been installed – one upon the roof, one climbing a column, and one sitting amongst the landscaping. A UK-qualified architect, Wei is renowned for producing visually inspiring art works for flagship Chinese developments. He took inspiration from a giant panda art installation on the side of a shopping centre in Sheffield’s sister city of Chengdu in China. The panda is a symbol for friendship and peace in Chinese culture, and the joyful display is now in place at one of Sheffield’s most visible developments.
