For patients to restore their dignity of life.

Percentage of Japanese families participating in policy selections for end-of-life patients’ dignity (International Comparative Research Report on Ideal Detection and Death)
Patients who are forced to stay hospitalized often suffer from loneliness and anxiety in an inorganic space of a hospital. It is difficult to have in such a place where one person can spend time with dignity and hope as a human being. On the other hand, it is hard to say that space for nurses who are exposed to harsh working environments that they have peace of mind is not well developed. In Japan, an environment where both hospitalized patients and nurses can spare time with confidence, is what is currently missing.

Designed like a two-family house/ thoroughly honest architecture in nature.
二世帯住宅のような設計 / 自然に徹底的に素直な建築。

Designed like a two-family house / thoroughly honest architecture in nature SACHI HOUSE, was designed to encourage hospitalized patients, their families, and friends to restore the dignity of life. It is a medical welfare facility like a “house” that functions as a place for relaxation for nurses. In order to protect the well-being of hospitalized patients and nurses, we designed this architecture like a two-family house. In addition, by constructing a space according to the site of a triangle as a special shape kept as it is, and by using local thinning wood, it also faced the issues of forest resources covering the whole of Japan. A thoroughly obedient architecture in the local nature and ecosystem was realized.

While building a contact point for both hospitalized patients and nurses, we prepared two entrance for spaces so that each person can secure their own, using the second floor for nurses and the first floor as a space for patients – a two-family like household.
入院患者、看護師両者の接点をつくりながら、それぞれが自分の空間も確保できるように 2つの入口を用意し、主に2階部を看護師、1階部を患者のための空間とする2世帯住宅のような設計。
SACHI HOUSE’s triangle site faces a main street with heavy traffic on one side, and a quiet side street on the other side. In order to take advantage of these locations to the full extent, instead of creating an opening on the main street side of the building, (that is the front side of the building) by designing the one side of the pathway to glaze and overlook the greenery of the garden, as if it is in the forest.

By using the bark that would been thrown away for the outer layer of the building leaving the bark as it is, we used the inside material as the squares, which is the contents of the wood for the interior, I devoted to the design which is to keep its natural form as much as possible.

Various design rules are set for the Maggie’s Center, which many famous architects have been involved, such as Frank Gehry and Zaha Hadid. Even when designing SACHI HOUSE, we followed all of these rules under the supervision of Maggies Center.

We built a community center involving local residents.

Sachi House opened as a welfare facility attached to Kawamura Hospital in Fuji City in Shizuoka Prefecture. It is starting to function not only as a place where inpatients, family members and nurses can spend peacefully, but also as a place for local residents to gather. Events such as yoga classes and tea ceremonies are also held frequently, generally opening on Wednesdays every week, and their roles are expanding more and more, including acting as community centers within the community.
