Roger Sherman, FAIA leads the Stone Soup Group at Gensler LA, which incubates design strategies and solutions that not only address problems of contemporary urbanization: how to manage change and (climate, economic) disruption; working at the nexus of digital technology and public space; new and expanded forms of community; and housing equity and affordability, amongst others. SSG’s radical incrementalism works through the development of prototypes that achieve wider impact by being brought to scale. The Group’s urban design work ranges from an Infrastructure and Development Plan for Northeastern Haiti; to two Riverfront Public Parks in Wuhan, China; to a pilot smart furniture installation for the LA Dept. of Transportation; to a pilot Resilience Hub in Compton. Its “Urban Awning” supportive housing prototype won a coveted PA Award from Architecture Magazine and a Design Award from Fast Company in 2021. Prior to joining Gensler, Roger was Director of Roger Sherman Architecture and Urban Design. His work was featured at TEDx and MoMA, in Newsweek and on CNN, and at the Venice, Rotterdam and Chicago Architecture Biennales. In 2006, Sherman, with Dana Cuff, co-founded cityLAB, an urban thinktank at UCLA, where he is an Adjunct Professor. Sherman is author of 3 books, including “LA Under the Influence: The Hidden Logic of Urban Property”, “Re American Dream: Six Housing Prototypes for Los Angeles”, and with Cuff, “Fast Forward Urbanism”. He has taught and lectured widely including at Harvard, Princeton and UC Berkeley.
