RIBA Stirling shortlist 2013 – Bishop Edward King Chapel

The wish for the chapel was for a ‘jaw-dropping, stunning and prayerful experience’, and the resulting building, it is agreed, makes a powerful statement about faith, not least because it is thought to be the first new entirely religious building in the county. Guided by South Oxfordshire council, the building is very 21st century, not just in its outer appearance but in its interior design. The traditional layout where people all sit facing forwards has been transformed and now seating is communal, inclusive and people face each other.
