Red Dot Award: Design Concept

A celebration of outstanding design achievements

Singapore, Singapore, 2016-09-23 –

A design concept awarded a Red Dot is akin to obtaining a seal of design quality that sets them apart from the rest in the field. Stellar designs are being recognised by the Red Dot jurors, an international panel made up of design experts.

This year, there were 340 concepts recognised across 30 categories out of submitted 4,698 entries from 60 countries. 245 concepts were awarded the globally coveted Red Dot by the international panel of distinguished jurors. 42 concepts were honoured Red Dot: Best of the Best for their exceptional design excellence and 53 concepts were credited with an Honourable Mention.

“Each of the winning concepts represent a significant achievement on the part of the designer. The adjudication process is a particularly demanding one, with each concept subjected to intense scrutiny led by a critical set of jury members”, articulated Mr Ken Koo, Asia President of Red Dot, as he spoke of the adjudication process. “Only 6% of all entries were awarded a Red Dot this year, making each awarded concept an outstanding feat of accomplishment. The Red Dot award also seeks to open doors for designers, giving them more opportunities to bring realise their own work”.

The Red Dot jury nominated four concepts from the 42 Red Dot: Best of the Best laureates for the Red Dot: Luminary – the highest level of recognition accorded at the Red Dot Award: Design Concept. The four nominees are “Google Self-Driving Car” by Google; “ILY-I” by Aisin Seiki; “PAPIER – MACHINE” by ENSCI – Les Ateliers; and “F 015 Luxury in Motion” by Mercedes-Benz.

This year’s Red Dot: Luminary was awarded to a design concept which is a forerunner in a new era of driverless cars. The “Google Self-Driving Car”, was described by Red Dot juror Prof. Carlos Hinrichsen as “a mobility concept that has been already known, but is not any less revolutionary. It is changing what we now understand as mobility, and is shifting or transforming the paradigms in the automotive industry by integrating technology, design and innovation in the service of human beings to improving their daily lives.”

At the awarding ceremony, the Red Dot: Luminary was presented to the Yoojung Ahn and Jared Gross from Google Inc. Prof. Dr. Peter Zec, Founder and CEO of Red Dot and Mr. Ken Koo then concluded the ceremony with the presentation of the winning works of 2016, entitled: “Exhibition: Future” at the Red Dot Design Museum Singapore. The Red Dot Design Yearbook 2016 for Design Concept was also launched. The winning designs will also be exhibited online at the Red Dot Award: Design Concept website. The yearbook and exhibitions are stalwarts of the Red Dot Design Award, filled with winning design concepts to inspire designers to strive for the best in their works.

The celebrations continued after the unveiling of the exhibition, where guests were served Wagyu beef, chicken and mushroom sliders by Lavish Dine, the official caterer for the awarding ceremony. This was topped off with the signature Red Dot cocktail, a refreshing concoction created by Founder & CEO of Red Dot, Prof. Dr. Peter Zec. The jubilant mood of the winning designers, honoured guests and members of the press carried on to the wee hours of the morning.

About Red Dot Award: Design Concept

In 2005, the Red Dot Design Award recognised the need to identify and celebrate new design concept and innovation, the precursor of tomorrow’s great product. Believing a design concept must be evaluated based on its design merit without prejudice, the award created a unprecedented platform that accept entries from companies to design students.

Today, the Red Dot Award for design concept has grown to be the largest and most recognised professional design competition for design concept and prototypes worldwide.
