Two generations ago, architects had a real job to do, rebuilding the cities shattered by war. Now the grandchildren of those utopians have a different job, which is to rescue a world that is being turned by the media, the money and the machines into a replica of itself. This talk coincides with the publication by CIRCA Press of Paul Shepheard’s book, Buildings: Between Living Time and Rocky Space. It will examine the motives and methods the book uses to discuss this huge, complicated and elusive subject, starting with the question “Why write about buildings?”
Paul Shepheard is an architect and writer living in London. He has taught at the Architectural Association, The University of Texas, The Academie van Bouwkunst, Amsterdam and Artesis, Antwerp. His previous books are What is Architecture?, The Cultivated Wilderness and Artificial Love (MIT Press): and How To Like Everything (Zero Books)
